From Surgeon to Visionary: The Journey Behind OphthaFund’s Founding

Allow me to take you on a journey that spans over three decades of dedication, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in the field of ophthalmology. I am honored to share with you the story behind the creation of OphthaFund.

My journey in ophthalmology began with a passion for healing and a commitment to advancing the frontiers of eye care. After completing my ophthalmology residency at The Medical University of South Carolina and a fellowship in oculoplastic surgery at the University of Arizona, I embarked on my career as an oculoplastic surgeon — a journey that would shape the trajectory of my life and career.

Over the years, I had the privilege of serving countless patients, each with their own unique challenges and stories which have informed and inspired my work to this day. But amid the day-to-day demands of clinical practice, I saw a need for more attentive ophthalmological care and was stirred to do more — I had a desire to drive change beyond the operating room.

This desire led me to venture into the world of entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2004, I co-founded Physicians Eye Surgery Center in Charleston, South Carolina, demonstrating my commitment to providing exceptional patient care and driving advancements in the field. Still motivated to leverage my expertise and experience for something greater, I embarked on a journey to create something truly transformative.

Thus, I joined hands with Andrea Marshall and George Magrath to create OphthaFund in 2023 — a culmination of years of dedication, passion, and an appreciation for excellence. With a vision to eradicate major eye diseases and illnesses worldwide through strategic investments and industry connections, OphthaFund represents the convergence of our founding trio’s diverse professional expertise and entrepreneurial spirit.

But beyond the numbers and the partnerships, OphthaFund is a testament to the power of people. As I reflect on our story, I’m flooded with gratitude — for the patients who have entrusted me with their care, for the colleagues who have inspired me, for the co-founders I’m taking these steps with, and for the investors who share our vision for a brighter, healthier future.

Join us as we embark on this journey — together, we can help bring clearer moments into focus.
